Meeting "Academic and scientific careers in Spain"

  • 20/09/2023

Organized by ANECA, in collaboration with the Ministry of Universities, within the framework of the UIMP summer courses

From September 6 to 8, the Agency organized, with the collaboration of the Ministry of Universities, the Meeting "The academic and scientific career in Spain", within the program of the summer courses of the Menéndez Pelayo International University, at the Palacio de la Magdalena (Santander). During three days the academic and scientific career in Spain was discussed, in the framework of other international experiences, as well as on issues that should articulate its reform, such as ethics in research, the planning of science and innovation policy, open science, the social impact of research activity, new systems and criteria for the evaluation of teaching and research staff, and the need to take special care of the early stages of the academic career.

In this sense, after the inauguration by the acting Minister of Universities, Joan Subirats; the rector of the UIMP, Carlos Andradas; and the director of ANECA, Pilar Paneque, responsible for the meeting, intervened in different sessions and round tables with experts in the subjects addressed and representatives of various groups involved in the subject under discussion. The complete program can be consulted through this link.

We started from the premises that: i) the academic career in Spain presents specificities in relation to our European context that are due, in part, both to a later and accelerated internationalization of our scientific activity and to the existence of a state accreditation system prior to access to the different figures of professors; and, that ii) this has favored the consolidation of a more productive and competitive system, but, at the same time, it has given rise to some undesired effects and to a university, scientific and evaluation community under stress and in need of new approaches and practices.

Thus, against the backdrop of recent legislative and regulatory changes (LOSU, LCTI, ENCA, etc.), the assumption of new research principles and practices and the reform of their evaluation (DORA, CoARA, etc.), the meeting allowed to advance in the reflection on the new approaches and practices of research and the reform of their evaluation (DORA, CoARA, etc.). ), the meeting allowed to advance in the reflection and discussion on different proposals for the change of model that will help ANECA to advance, among others, in the revision and better adjustment of the call for six-year research periods to the mentioned rules and principles, as well as in the definition of criteria of the new Royal Decree of state accreditation, which was published in the BOE the same day of the beginning of the meeting (September 6).
