Royal Decree (RD) 822/2021, of 28 September, which establishes the organisation of university education and the procedure for quality assurance, states that the study plans leading to the award of official degrees (bachelor's, master's and doctorate) will be verified by the Council of Universities, with the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA) or, where appropriate, the assessment bodies determined by the Law of the Autonomous Communities, and which comply with the criteria and standards of quality established by the European Commission, being responsible for assessing the curricula, in accordance with the verification protocols established jointly between the Agencies that meet the aforementioned requirement.
In accordance with the provisions of the aforementioned Royal Decree, ANECA, together with the University Quality Assurance Agencies, has drawn up assessment protocols for the verification of Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral degrees, which can be consulted in the corresponding section of each programme.
The verification process involves the ex-ante evaluation of curricula prior to their implementation. This process of external evaluation of the degrees for their verification by the Council of Universities is a requirement for the initial accreditation of the degree and for its authorisation by the corresponding Autonomous Community.
ANECA carries out these evaluations through the VERIFICA procedure.
