Meeting in Brussels on the eve of the official ESG review process

On the occasion of the Quality Assurance Fit for the Future Project (QA-FIT) coordinated by ENQA, ANECA was selected as part of the group of European agencies invited to participate in reflection sessions, in focus group format, held on May 13 and 14 at the headquarters of the ENQA Secretariat.
The QA-FIT project seeks to reflect on whether and how the current ESG framework in the EHEA limits the responsiveness of quality assurance to trends and innovations in higher education, and whether there should be more room for the development of alternative approaches to quality assurance.
In addition, this initiative will provide key inputs to the new official ESG review process commissioned, through a joint communiqué, by the ministers of the EHEA meeting in Tirana on May 29-30.
With respect to the sessions held to discuss in depth some of the central issues arising from the surveys conducted within the framework of this same project, aspects such as the following were addressed:
- The diversity of the EHEA quality agencies (in terms of their mission, objectives and activities), as well as their perceptions of the key objectives of the ESG.
- The purposes of the ESG and how they set the framework for the work of the quality agencies.
- The scope of external quality assurance, the quality agencies' attention to various substantive issues (diversity and inclusion; academic integrity; online/semi-presential education; research; third mission/service to society; internationalization) and what impact strengthening a reference to these issues in the ESG would have.
- The methodologies to be employed in external quality assurance, with particular attention to innovative approaches and the relevance (and potential impact) of incorporating greater flexibility and the use of different approaches.
- The essential elements of the ESG in order to distill the most relevant aspects.
- Baseline questions to guide the ESG review process and to ensure that the most relevant perspectives, contexts (and potential uses) are taken into consideration.
